Jakarta, 30 September 2024 – A new twist has emerged in the ongoing corruption case involving tin commodities. The Jakarta Corruption Court heard testimonies from several witnesses, including Tamron, a key figure in the scandal.

The witnesses shed light on the complex business dealings between PT Timah and private smelters involved in processing tin ore purchased from small-scale miners operating within PT Timah's concession area.

Tamron expressed concern about the economic impact of the ongoing investigation on the local community. He argued that the cooperation between PT Timah and private smelters had been crucial for boosting tin production and the economy of Bangka Belitung province.

"The small-scale mining sector is a major source of livelihood for the people of Bangka Belitung. This case has severely disrupted the local economy, resulting in one of the lowest economic growth rates in Indonesia," Tamron told the court.

Denying any wrongdoing, Tamron explained that the five selected smelters were chosen based on their readiness and capabilities, rather than any personal connections.

Other witnesses, including Suwito Gunawan, Robert Indarto, Rosalina, Achmad Albani, Hassan Tjie, and Kwang Yung, also provided testimony regarding the case.

Rosalina acknowledged a meeting between the defendant, Harvey Moeis, and other parties to discuss adjusting the purchase price of tin by PT Timah. She explained that involving private smelters in the tin smelting process was more cost-effective than doing it in-house.

"PT Timah uses electric furnaces for smelting, while private smelters often use coal-fired furnaces, making the process more economical," she said.

Harvey Moeis, the primary defendant in the case, is accused of causing state losses of Rp300 trillion and enriching himself by Rp420 billion. He has pleaded not guilty and waived his right to file an exception.

The court has scheduled the next hearing for August 22, 2024, to examine witness testimonies presented by the prosecution.
